What the pay levels mean in rupees
The notification gives most posts a level, not a rupee figure; the rupees come from the Tamil Nadu pay matrix. These are the ranges in G.O.(Ms) No.90, Finance (Pay Cell) Department, 26 February 2021, for the four levels that Group 4 posts use. The first figure is the bottom of the level and the second is the top.
Pay level of each Group 4 post in 2026
Every one of the 46 post entries in Notification No. 11/2026 falls into one of the rows below. Post codes are in brackets. “EPF” is the notification’s own mark for Employees’ Provident Fund; those posts are in corporations and boards.
Three posts printed with a rupee scale
Three rows in the notification print rupees instead of a plain level, and none of them matches the government ranges above. Read these as the organisation’s own scale, exactly as printed:
For the other posts marked EPF, the notification prints only the level. Corporations and boards may follow their own pay scales, so the government range for that level may not apply to them exactly.
Basic pay, gross pay and in-hand pay
The ranges on this page are basic pay only. Gross pay is basic pay plus allowances, such as Dearness Allowance (DA) and House Rent Allowance (HRA), which are added as per Government orders and vary. In-hand pay is what is left after deductions.
- Fixed: the level of your post and the basic pay range of that level.
- Not fixed: the DA rate, HRA and the other allowances, which change with Government orders.
- Not printed here: a DA percentage, an HRA figure or an in-hand amount. Any such figure goes out of date with the next order, so check the current order rather than a number copied from a website.
Why salary pages disagree
Most of the differences come from old figures. Before G.O.(Ms) No.90 of 2021, the Tamil Nadu Revised Pay Rules of 2017 gave Level 8 as Rs.19,500–62,000. The 2021 order added five more cells to every level, so Level 8 now runs to Rs.71,900. The bottom of each level did not change; only the top did.
- “19,500–62,000” is the old 2017 Level 8 range. The current range is 19,500–71,900.
- “16,600–52,400” is the old 2017 Level 3 range. The current government range is 16,600–60,800, though one board post (3214) still prints the old figures.
- Corporation scales. A few corporation posts print their own scales, such as 17,000–54,060 for Junior Assistant 3788. A page that quotes one of these for all Group 4 posts is wrong for the rest.
- Gross or in-hand figures. These include allowances at whatever rate applied when the page was written, so two pages written at different times can both be honest and still disagree. (This is our reading, not an official statement.)
You do not pick the post when you apply
The pay you get depends on the post you are allotted, and that is decided by your rank. The application only asks whether you want to be considered for all posts, or for all posts other than Forest Guard with Driving Licence and Forest Watcher. Posts are allotted by rank at counselling, so the marks you score decide how much choice you have.
Questions people ask
What is the salary of a TNPSC Group 4 post?
Most Group 4 posts, including VAO, Junior Assistant and Typist, are at Level 8 of the Tamil Nadu pay matrix: basic pay of Rs.19,500 to Rs.71,900, under G.O.(Ms) No.90 of 26 February 2021. Allowances such as Dearness Allowance and House Rent Allowance are added on top as per Government orders.

Village Administrative Officer (post code 2025) is at Level 8 in Notification No. 11/2026, which is basic pay of Rs.19,500 to Rs.71,900. That is the same level as Junior Assistant and Typist in government departments.
Which Group 4 posts have the highest pay level?
The Level 10 posts, at Rs.20,600 to Rs.75,900: Steno-Typist (Grade III) in most departments, Personal Clerk, Shorthand Typist (Grade III), Junior Inspector of Co-operative Societies and Senior Laboratory Assistant. The Waqf Board Steno-Typist post (3847) is at Level 8.
What is the in-hand salary of a Group 4 employee?
This page does not give an in-hand figure, because allowances and deductions change with Government orders. The fixed part is the basic pay range of your post's level. Allowances such as DA and HRA are added to it as per the orders in force.
Why do some websites say the Group 4 salary is Rs.19,500 to Rs.62,000?
That is the old Level 8 range from the 2017 pay rules. G.O.(Ms) No.90 of 2021 added five more cells to every level, so Level 8 now runs to Rs.71,900. The starting figure, Rs.19,500, did not change.
Can I choose VAO or Junior Assistant when I apply?
No. The application only asks whether you want to be considered for all posts, or for all posts other than Forest Guard with Driving Licence and Forest Watcher. Posts are allotted by rank at counselling.
